LOL, thanks Ric ;) So far so good. The computer hasn't gone to sleep. My uptime is 4 hrs 25 min....We'll see what happens from here on out.

***UPDATE*** Well, my uptime is now 17 hrs 15 min. So far so good. Let's hope that deleting that file fixed the problem for me at least. ;)

Well my computer is still going to sleep. But it only happens when it is really working hard. My processing is set to automatic. And I just found out yesterday that my friend's 12" PowerBook is doing the same thing! It's about a year old as well. So, I think I am going to take it to the genius and see what they tell me.

Oh by the way, I got the job at Apple!! I found out a couple of hours ago. So in the words of one of my favorite characters (Homer Simpson) I close with a "WooHoo!"

Hi there Searay345,

sounds like a heat problem to me...have you got any temp monitor software ?

Have you had a look in the logs to see what it says is happening ?

Congrats on the Apple Job !

Hmmm I wonder what discount you get ? ;-)

Hey Ric. Yes, I use temp monitoring software. My computer usually sits around 50 Degrees C. It has always been in that area. It only get's worm when I run high powered apps like SecondLife or Norton Anti-Virus. But it has never gone to sleep in the past even when it hit 60 C. I'll check the logs.

Ahhh....Ric, or anybody, could someone point me in the right direction where to find the log files, for the log files I need?? I have a few...Thanks

Oh, I'll find out what discounts I get on Tuesday next week. :);) But my guess is they'll tell me that is "privileged information" LOL.

Hey Ric, I emailed the system log to you. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction where to locate it. I knew you had to open 'console' but couldn't remember where on earth to locate the system log. I guess I should of looked more carefully. LOL

That is so cool. Yeah, I am going to start working on my genius certifications soon. That must be fun being a select member developer. Are you going to the WWDC conference this year (Aug 7-11)??

I wish I could go ! But family and business interests don't really permit it, maybe next year...

I shall be watching it on the Internet, as long as they do the Quicktime Streaming again...

It'll be nice to see Leopard !!!

What are the genius certifications are they like the Technician ones ?

I'm currently doing the Portable and Desktop ones...just to have them !

It'll be nice to have a 'Genius' amongst us !

Hey Ric. I emailed another log file to you. It happened again just 20 minutes ago. I had to do a PMU dump in order to 'wake up' the computer. It is a heating issue, so it looks like I am going to have to go the geniuses.

Anyway, there are four genius certifications I'm aware of....Desktop, Portable, Software/OS X, and iPod. I am going to get all four. There may be a corporate one in there too, and I'll pick that one up as well. Oh, there may be a Server certification in there too, my guess is corporate. We'll see. I definately want my Portable/Desktop certifications first.

What I may do is go out to San Francisco to 'Apple's Campus', take the classes there, and maybe get some development experience as well. I'll just work/live there for a year or to.

Yeah, I would love to get out to the WWDC conference. Maybe the Apple store I work for will pay for the trip :);) It's a business trip LOL I also believe they will have the Keynote on the web in QT for us to watch. (I Hope)!

Oh, I forgot to mention this about my job. My job title is "Mac Specialist."

Hi there,

thanks for the logs. It could be a temp problem, this is normally a repair job !

What temp did it record at the same time ?

Living and working in San Francisco for a year sounds great !

I've only ever been there once, just for a few days !

This will have to be your first 'homework project', it could be sensors that have gone , but more likely logic board at fault.

You''l have to see what the resident genius's have to say !

I have software that diagnoses' these problems, you'll get access to it when you start your Hardware courses.

I'll be watching the QT, I want to Leopards spots !

Hey Ric, thanks for looking at those. Thanks for all your help. Luckily, I keep daily backups of everything. I'll get my computer to them when I can. Thanks again!

I want to see Lepord spots on the keynote as well!!!!

I wish I had that software LOL

Hey Ric

Well, it is getting worse by the day. Pretty much anytime it falls asleep, I have to do a PMU dump. :( However, I am working at the genius bar (supervised of course since I am not quite a genius yet) for a couple days next week. Maybe I can get some "priority service." LOL

hello all

i thought i had the sleep issue resolved as i did not have that problem for quite a while.

starting two days ago, however, the problem started recurring and has become very persistent. i tried everything i tried previously - reset the pmu/pram/delete the plist and reset the energy saver setting but all to no avail. i have done this several times today - around 5 or 6 times (at least) - and have no idea what to do.

ric, i emailed you my system log from the last time it happened.. hope you could have a it look at it and help.

oh, and the date/time keeps resetting to january 1970!

thank you for your help!

Hey iryskel, Whenever you perform a PMU dump, the clock always sets itself to 1970 because the energy that is stored up in the ciruits is released when you hold the power button. This resets the logic board clock. Computer chips can hold an electric charge for hundreds of years. I was electrocuted by a computer that wasn't plugged in/powered up since 1980.

So is your clock resetting whenever you shut down the computer normally or only when you do a PMU dump?

Hi,

Searay, I haven't really had a chance to shut down the computer normally - it tends to go into sleep mode and I think I might be resetting the PMU when I try to force a shutdown by pressing on the power button. According to the apple website, I need to hold down the power button for 5seconds in order to reset the PMU. It is possible that I might be holding down the power button for that long when I am trying to force a shut-down, but I am not certain.

I do however have a feeling that the resetting of the date is not linked to the PMU reset - I let the computer shutdown on its own once, by disconnecting both the A/C adapter and taking out the battery and then leaving the computer alone for a while. When I restarted the computer then, the date was reset once again.

Ric, thank you. Please let me know if the logs are informative.

Thank you all for your help!

Hello,

argh, what an awful problem - this problem seems rather popular with the August'05 batch of 15" 1.67Ghz powerbooks! :(

Since I still have six days left in my applecare, I suppose I should bring it down to the apple store and have them have a look at it to see if they can fix it....

I really want to backup my hard drive before I do this, but have been unable to keep the computer on long enough.... things on my hard drive should be safe?

Hi Danny,

Thanks for the link to the solution. Unfortunately it seems a little technical for me and what i understand is this:

I go to terminal and enter the text to remove the PMU exactly as it is typed out in the solution. Then I reboot.

I don't know what I should do after that - do i put power management back in (i think not yet?) or do I go to the next part (under "now for the real fix")?

Would you please give me step by step instructions (as I am a relative newbie and have never used the terminal before) to first remove the power management so that it does not go to sleep. Following that I think I can just copy all my important files to my external hard drive. Could you then tell me how to put the power management back in?

Sorry for the trouble and thanks a bunch for the help!
