Hi there,

Have you tried resetting the PMU that can also help with wake from sleep issues...

...also can I have a look at your system.log that will help in finding out what the problem is...

Use the Goto folder... then type in /private/var/log/

goto001.jpg

goto002.jpg

goto003.jpg

This will open a folder with a file called "system.log" in it...please email it as opposed to posting it. (e-mail address removed) (there may be a few in there...its the one with todays date we need, if it's happened today !)

Hi there,

when you take the battery out and then unplug from the mains...then hold the power key down for 5 seconds...then let go...then put battery back in...then plugin mains and then power on...

this should wake it...

Hi Iryskel

I've been have been having the same trouble. - sleeping computer - mine is a G4 lap top 1.67 ghz

Did you manage to sort it out.

I've done all the usual stuff but still happens - reset permissions - reset NVRAM - PMU etc

Would really appreciate it if you got back to me - really need the computer for my work and stressed out to bits about it.

Kind regards

Dear Ric

Thanks for getting back to me. I have just dumped the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist as you have suggested and am now playing itunes track.

I won't be able to know if it has worked for maybe a few hours because the problem is intermitent. Sometimes it runs for hours and then does it. Especially when I have the fire wire Motu 896 in. First of all I thought it was the Motu Firewires fault but it does it when I don't have it in. However it is more frequent when it is in.

Is there anyway the firewire could have caused this in the first place???

Your help is truly appreciated - I make my living as a composer and have a project and I am reluctant to take it in to the shop (out of warrantee) and the thread about loosing filre freaked me a little. I have back up on a lacie external drive but still worried the problem may have corrupted the drive also. I am not that brilliant at tech so maybe I am worrying too much.

Kind regards and thanks.

Well here is my update.

took it back again and this time they replaced the logic board.... few hours after getting it home, still no luck!

So i ring Apple customer care and they wanted me to pay for the call, like wtf, so i said no, so he could only give me a "hint" lol im starting to think this is all a game...

his hint was to reset the PMU which was what Ric told me to do ages ago, so still ive gotten no where.

Taking it to Sydney's biggest apple centre on Thursday.

will keep posted.

Dear Waxology
Thanks for getting back. Sorry about your problem. I had the same thing with apple - finished paying 35 quid for the PM whatsit and NVRAM and it is still doing it.

Wrote loads of feedback stuff to apple about this charging over the phone.

Not that happy with apple as a company at the moment. I think they are in great danger of loosing their rep/cred. They seem more interested in keeping up with Bill Gates. Last couple of years I've bought 2 power books an Imac and before that a G3 and still have an old ES (still working) - you would think that maybe they would support us as much as we have championed their products.

Anyway hope it gets sorted (Keep me posted)

Ric contacted me (God Bless Mac-help) and I have just tried dumping the power management play list. Working so far but as you said it can happen at any time - Kind regards James

Hi all,

thanks for the logs James !

There are lots of entries like this in your log...

May 8 17:59:53 localhost kernel: Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.

This is telling us that one of the Sensors 'thinks' that something inside your PowerBook is getting too hot and so it sends it to sleep to 'protect' your Mac !

Now the chances are that this is either a software 'fault' ie one of the plist (preference files) is/was corrupt, )(in your case we will have to see how you get on), or it could be a 'dodgy' sensor, if it is a sensor then it would have to go back to Apple for repair.

You can download Temperature Monitor to see if the sensors are showing anything untoward !

Hi there,

when they replaced the logic board, did they wipe the Hard drive and install fresh ?

Or did they just leave it as is ?

Dear Ric

Thanks for looking at my log for me. Just a quick up date. I worked fine for the whole length of the batter (2hours). Waited for the "charge your battery" box to appear and plugged in the charger. The computer went to sleep almost immediately and kept going to sleep every 30 seconds or so.

quit Itune. Left it for a bit and seemed ok.

After dumping the plist (preference files) I reset the enery saver for 30 mins.

When I checked after it had gone to sleep a few times it was reset for 15mins??? weird!

So I suppose it's looking like the heat sensor. Should I send you the latest log.
Or do you think it is conclusive??

Thanks again ric for all the time you spent on this. PS will download the heat software.

Kind regards

James.

Hi there James,

unfortunately, it's not conclusive, that's part of the problem ;-)

The only way to virtually guarentee that it is a hardware fault and not software is to wipe everything off and put on a clean install of OS X then see if the problem persists.

It's a bit drastic but it's the only way to prove/disprove whether software or hardware.

By all means send me the new log. I'll have a look.

When you trashed the plist file, did you do a restart ?

If not, then throw the plist file away and then restart then set the sleep prefs to what you want.

ok well i put mine in a little earlier. So it went in today for round 3, this time at Sydney's largest apple centre.

The lady said if its not fixed we can get printouts off the summary from each service and put it to apple for a replacement. So if this 3rd visit doesnt fix it i will be putting in for a replacment. its been over a month of trying to deal with Apple its ridiculous.

will keep u posted

cheers

Hey Ric,

Well i took it to Apple Centre Broadway in Sydney, they ran it for 3 days non stop or so they say and it didnt do it, they said they ran quicktime movies and it never once did it.. but he did believe me it did it, he just couldnt get it to do it.. so i picked it up... used it in the car on the way home and within 30min it did it again.... so i dont know what he was talking about! anyway that night i got a video of it doing it.. the vid was pricless in 1min it sleeps 3 times and has the temp monitor saying "trackpad 118.5" then sleeping again and has my hands not able to wak it.

anyway i started a new job that week and a guy at my work has a best mate who works at an apple centre in the cbd.. so i started emailing this guy and told him the **** ive been through... i sent him the vid and then told me to take it to him... the vid was all they needed.. they looked up the serial and saw id had HDD, logic board, power brick, keyboard and battery all replaced and they are like "yep you got a lemon"

he told me to ring apple head office and ask for a customer rep.. once there ask for his full name and a job number.... so i did this... its so funny when i asked for this the guys tone changed and he knew i was serious... becasue if u get a job number and then the go slack for months it works in your favour as you can say "i rang up months ago and u have done nothing" so get a job number.

anyway the guy at apple head office got sent the video by the guy in the apple centre CBD and they decided to REPLACE it! yep brand new... its been two weeks though... appaently a lot of people have to "sign off" on it.. i dont think apple like giving away things.. seeing they dont make my powerbook anymore i think im getting a top of the line macbook pro...which is a bonus... but **** i woulda rathered my existing one if it was fixed months ago.

so anyway.. there you go guys! keep on them... get a job number.. and most of all get evidence! get it on your digi cam going nuts and then you're looking good.. no one would believe or could understand the problem... so show them!

good luck... i'll let you know when i get my new one and how it all goes.

Cheers

Hey there. I have the same computer as all of you (1.67 Ghz, 2GB ram, about a year old.) I am having the exact same problems. I am going to try deleting the com.apple.powermangment plst. Let's see what happens. I hope to be working in my local apple store in a week. I had my interview today, ironically. I'll keep you posted.
