Yet Another Non-starting Powermac G4

I've just bought a second hand Powermac G4 dual 450MHz through eBay. It was working fine until I started it in Target Mode to link to my iMac DV 400MHz. I followed the instructions on the Apple website fof linking in Target Mode but the Powermac did not show up on the iMac desktop, and the Powermac monitor went blank and then into powersave mode (its a Mitsubishi DiamondPlus 230).

I was then flying blind, so in accordance with the Apple instructions pressed the power button on the Powermac to get it out of Target Mode. Since then it has refused to reboot. Because it won't wake the monitor (which is fine as it works slaved off the iMac) I can't see what is going on or use the keyboard or mouse. I had to shut it down by holding in the poweer button until it switched itself off.

When I power it up with the button on the front the button lights, and the Cap Lock key flashes once. I don't hear any start-up chime, but can't be sure that the volume is turned up. The fans run and the hard drive sounds as though it spins up, but there is little or no sound of it accessing as far as I can tell.

I have tried booting it from a genuine retail OS X 10.4 install disk having opened the drive with the little button on its front behind the shutter but although I can hear a brief spin from the DVD drive it gets no further.

Is it fritzed?

Any suggestions as to what I should do to get the computer to start would be gratefully received, otherwise I fear another set of eBay items for parts from a dead Powermac. Are there any tests that can be done without masses of specialist knowledge/equipment to determine the problem.I'm just wondering if these machines have reached the end of their economic life?

Hi there,

have you tried booting into single user mode ?

Reboot hold down the command and s key untill you see white text on a black screen.

Is the monitor new ? Or did it come with it ? Are the monitor cables seated correctly ?

Thanks for the suggestions.

I've traded emails with the guy who I bought the machine from. He suggested removing all of the RAM and then starting the machine - result a chime and a pulsating power switch light, then shutting down, replacing the RAM, removing the battery and leaving the machine for a while.

I did this and restarted the computer - a bit more activity but still not up. I tried restarting from an old OS 9 cd - a bit more activity but still not there. So I thought "if the machine can't find the hard disk it will have to boot from the DVD-ROM" so I shut down and totally disconnected the hard disk, started the machine with the OS9 cd in the drive and away we went. Sleep worked, restart worked, shut down from special menu worked. All seemed to be well.

SO, time to reconnect the hard drive and try again… deep breath, here goes…

machine now up and running HOORAY! :)

I suspect the Firewire may be dead though as I saw "broken PHY" in the logs. Probably what kicked all of the problems off in the first place as it would have meant that the machine was trying to run in Target mode without any means of communicating! I'll search the forums for advice on Firewire faults.

Hi Ric

My powermac still seems to be running okay. However I've been having a look at one or two possible issues. The machine runs OS 10.4.8 which was installed before it was sent to me. It does not have OS 9 or classic set up.

1) according to system profiler the Boot ROM is 3.3.1f1 - should be updated to the latest version
2) the updater says the update can only be done with the machine booted in OS 9 but this is not on the machine

Could the Boot ROM version be an issue with the apparently non-functioning Firrewire?
