Word doc unresponsive

I am trying to edit a word doc and it has frozen! There is a rotating.
Colour wheel on the screen. What does it mean and what Shoud I do?

It means Word has has a minor fit of sorts & you need to Force Quit it from the  menu. Any unsaved changes will be lost. Relaunch Word & go to File, Open Recent to find the document you were working on if applicable.
