Wired Memory

My iMac which is running OS X is running very slowly. I have updated software and rebooted etc. In Activity Monitor it is showing as using 3.7Gb of wired memory. I've read that you can't alter the settings for Wired memory, but this seems really high. Any ideas anyone?

Depends what System is doing. Check Activity Monitor processes.

It does't seem to be doing very much. CPU usage fluctuates between around 4-6%. No applications running and all software has been updated. Seems very odd. I have a few other MACs that when running show about 650mb wired when running quite a few apps.
