Why won't my iMac Automatically upgrade to OS 10.8?

Hi

I've tried to auto-update my desktop iMac from OS 10.6.8 to 10.8, but the Apple message says the system is has received all auto updates, etc.

I need OS 10.7 (or higher) to use a specific application, and I'm wondering how to get the OS to the next level if the auto-update won't allow it.

I realize this is a dumb question/scenario, so please have patience.
