Weird characters â€

Sorry for any bother. Since day One I got my new iMac I get this characters in places in documents and emails etc: †, can find no way to fix it. Must I re-install a character set or something? Thanks so much for any help.

You have probably got your System Preferences > Language & Text or Input Sources wrong. It's one of the things that the Set Up asks.

Kaveman, thanks for your kind reply, awesome to have experts the likes of you to lean on. I had a check but saw nothing out of the ordinary, what I did was to tick Input at US International and US Standard. I don't know what I am doing, but that seemed like the most likely thing to do? Sorry, so new to Mac it is totally scary.....
