weird box appears . . .

A gray box, about 1 1/2" X 1 1/2' recently appeared on my screen. It has a row of small black boxes across the bottom. Doesn't seem to do anything, but it's annoying and it just sits there - won't go away. Any idea what it is and where it came from? Most important, how do I get rid of it?

-What applications are running when this happens...i.e. Safari?

Thanks for answering. The box disappeared as mysteriously as it appeared. What I have is an older MacBook (the one with an aluminum case) and I'm running OS X 10.8.5. The box was there all the time, didn't show up with any particular application. But, it's gone now. So, who knows? Thanks anyway.

It would be good if you ran Disk Utility and 1) verified and repaired permissions, and 2) verified and repaired the internal disk on your Mac. With the machine being "somewhat" old, and assuming it has the original internal hard drive, it would be good to check out its' "health". What would be better is if you had a more robust disk maintenance/repair program to do the job, like Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro.
