i can't get my head around why i can preview my website in dreamweaver (all links work and all files are uploaded correctly etc) through safari, but not when i type my web address in as normal.

the page i preview in dreamweaver has a link to my hosting where there is a flash mp3 player. when i preview the page in dreamweaver, all the links work and the mp3 player starts to work.

when i then quit dreamweaver and access my site address (remember, all the files are uploaded and the links work) i get nothing where the mp3 player should be!

i asked my girlfriend to check my site on her Mac and it worked fine in safari and firefox...so that's confirmation that the site's mp3 player actually works!

but i can't understand why i can't view it in my own safari or firefox...i reset safari, repaired my disk permissions...check my settings in safari...

i'm totally stumped, can anyone help?

Hi there,

have you a link we can have a look at, it may help diagnose the problem ?

I would think from what you have said that it is a 'Cache' problem...

Try creating a new user account on your Mac and try and access the website from that version of Safari, because it is a 'new' version there will be nothing in the cache...

Hi Ric and thanks for the reply.

http://www.darkredbusker.co.uk

If it is a cache problem, could you direct me on how to manually purge whatever I need to purge in order for it to work properly?

I really don't want to have to create another account!

The weird thing is though: I can still view the mp3 player in Safari via Dreamweaver...so it doesn't make any sense!

There have been some who have said it works fine, and others who have said the the mp3 player just doesn't work at all...a big white space where it should be.

I really want to sort this out! It's driving me mad and has pretty much wasted an entire day!

I hope you can help me further, I'd appreciate it!

P.S If I do create a new user account, can I easily delete it?

Thanks

Hi there,

creating and deleting an Account is straightforward...

Watch the movie's. Create New Account or Delete Account

(you must log out of the Account that you want to delete.)

I have been on the website above and no sign of an MP3 player...just a white hole ?

You can send me the source code if you want of the site and I'll have a look.

Yeah that's right, just a white hole.

Yet on my girlfriend's computer (iMac) it works fine.

The site is essentially a blogger.com site with my site name pointed to it...anyway, here's the code, which is based on the template you get in the blogger.com site.

My mp3 player code points to the flash player at angelfire.com and all related files...including the actual mp3s of course!

OK, so here's the code:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">

Hi there,

I have been able to view you site directly in Firefox and Opera and the MP3 player works !

Safari is still a no go !

Viewing via Dreamweaver--> Safari works...

I shall have another look tomorrow. I think it may be down to the 'slowness' of angelfire.com

I think that Safari is giving a 'maximum' time for the page to load....and it isn't loading in time.

Where as Firefox , Opera etc seem to be a bit more forgiving !

I shall investigate further...

Actually, I had the same problem with Safari on a Simpsons site I was working on. I asked on a different forum about it. See if this helps you at all. Here is what the guy told me. Best of luck to you!

First off, the page is not formatted properly.

A web page should have the following structure:

<!DOCTYPE ...>
<html>
<head>
</head>
<body>
</body>
</html>

Notice how the page is nested within the html statements with none of the sections overlapping. You have

[no doctype statement]
<head>
</head>
<html>
<head>
</head>
<body>

You have two head sections instead of one, one of the head sections is outside the html section.

You have no closing body or html statements.

The source for the popup player is also badly constructed. There is no doctype statement and there no body section at all nor is there a closing html statement.

Neither of these pages meets accepted html/xhtml standards.

Looking at Safari's Activity window for the player, only your mp3player.php page is listed. Safari has not even tried to load your flash file.

Safari normally does not have problems with flash files, so something about the way you are calling it is causing problems. It could be something as simple as not having a body section.

Safari is the least forgiving of browsers when it comes to rendering non-standard, bad, or incorrect code.

Thanks Ric.

It's good to know that after supplying you with the code you can effectively experience exactly what has been happening to me!

The only difference being that Firefox won't work for me. I will have to download Opera and check.

It doesn't work in Camino either.

Slowness of Angelfire. Yeah I thought that might be the case, but I just posted an entry in another blogger.com account I have an it kept crashing. Painfully slow. Perhaps a combination of the two?

I'll use my friend's hosting to try it out.

I'm going to create another user account now and check things that way.

Let me know if you can solve this!

Thanks.

@ searay345

Thanks for that. I am no html wizz (i know a enough to very basically get by!) but i checked the code and saw that there is a </body> in the code.

This confuses me even more!

Anyway, the code is actually copied and pasted directly from a blogger.com basic template. The only code that is non-standard of course is the mp3 player code.

The mp3 player code is also a direct copy/paste from the mp3 player creator's site!

One of my friends has reported to me that the mp3 player loads in IE but says 'playlist not found', which is wrong, because the .xml file is in the same directory as the .swf mp3 player!

Which site did you post on? i'd be interested to know.

Thanks for your help!

I posted it under the Apple forums through apple.com. Here is the link to the topic.

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1547754&#1547754

Let me take a look at your code and see if I can offer any more help to you.

***UPDATE*** Ok after looking carefully at your site and reading this thread carefully, you have a flash mp3 player on angelfire that should be embedded into your link which you provided, but all you see is a white whole where the mp3 flash player should be, correct?

Hmmm....I am stumped. I looked over your code and I ran it through W3C validation and it passed! Here's the link: http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http://www.darkredbusker.co.uk/

Wow!

Well thanks for doing all that.

I am going to try and host the mp3 player elsewhere to see if angelfire is the problem. That's the only thing I can think of now.

I will report back soon.

The one thing that my girlfriend just pointed out though, is that it works perfectly on her Firefox and Safari. The only browser is doesn't work in is Camino.

This is so weird!

Thanks for all the help guys.

Hi guys,

Yeah I changed the hosting from angelfire to my friend's webspace and now the mp3 player works fine...almost...

The track "Brainwash" works no problem at all but "Alright" just won't load for me. Not sure why...I'm getting to the point where I might just bite the bullet and buy my own hosting and design a site myself!

I want to use blogger because I'd rather concentrate on learning how to be a better musician/producer than spending time on web design...I would like to get into web design, but you can't do everything and expect to get good etc etc...I digresss.

Anyway, so the track "Alright" is not loading and on my PC the playlist cannot be found in IE.

So Safari is sorted as far as the 'white space' problem...but the problems I have mentioned must be something to do with either the mp3 player or blogger, or perhaps a combination of both!

Perhaps I could just use blogger for my site/blog without music and direct viewers to myspace...shame I can't have an mp3 player working though...
