VPN dropouts and security

Hi, When my VPN connection drops out, it defaults to a standard connection to my ISP. So the whole world gets to know my IP address and everything else about what I am doing. Is there some way I can setup my iMac (mountain lion) not to revert to ISP connection upon VNC disconnect? In other forums people have suggested how to do it for PC by doing some command line fiddling, or some firewall tricks. But I don't know how to do it for the Mac. Can anyone help?
