Virus notifications

I am requesting some assistance with my iMac. I have been getting messages on my screen stating that they have detected a virus a "Trojan_" and then there's a long number afterward and it keeps repeating asking me to click here to solve the issue. Frankly I'm reluctant to click there never knowing where it's going to take me. Is there anyway I can relieve myself of this annoying notice and/or remove the virus and the notifications?
