I have a wireless network running through Airport Express with my D-Link ADSL modem. The router is assigning IP addresses on the network. The Express is connected to my amplifier by phono lead. Both the Express and iTunes are configured for Airtunes but no list of remote speakers is showing in iTunes. What have I forgotten to do? Hope you can help.

Hi Ric and thanks for getting back to me.

For a start my admin utility has a lot more tabs than yours:

AirPort/Internet/Network/Port Mapping/Access Control/WDS/Music

My Internet settings are as follows:
Connect using: Ethernet
Configure: Manually
IP address: 192.168.1.23
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router address: 192.168.1.1
DNS servers: empty
Domain Name: empty
WAN Ethernet Port: Automatic

My Music Settings are as follows:
Enable Airtunes on this base station is checked
iTunes speaker Name: Living Room
No passwords are set

I have iTunes v6.0 and prefs are set to find remote speakers.

So hopefully its obvious what is wrong now,

Thanks

Thanks for those...

Is the light on your Express green ?

Did you set up the Express with the "AirPort Express Assistant" maybe it's worth doing it again ?

I can't see anything obviously wrong...

I'll have another look in a bit...

Hi Ric,

I set everything up with the setup assistant several times just to be sure. Originally it took me six hours of learning enough about networks to configure it correctly. Do you think it is worth hard resetting the express with the little button? I have a green light on the Express - I am using it now for web access to send you this. Its just the Airtunes I can't get to work. Would it be anything to do with my computer being on a different subnet to the Airport - someone suggested that though my knowledge of networks gets fuzzy there. And no that button has not appeared in iTunes yet, sorry - aty least I know what it looks like now!!. Thanks for your time and if you have anymore suggestions please fire away.

Well done !

yes, you need to be on the same subnet !

ie

192.168.10.x

Where all the computers/devices have a different number as x

Hi Ric,

So I changed the computers subnet to match the Airport and hey presto the list appeared in iTunes.

Heres the rub. I cannot run the computer and Airport and my ADSL modem/router on the same subnet - they conflict. This means I have a choice between letting Airport or my router assign IP addresses. And therefore a choice between Airtunes or a wireless internet connection. I've tried turning DHCP off on the router but then get very confused how to set up the Airport as it is still the ADSL modem which is providing the internet access.

Not sure if that makes sense but if so what are your thoughts on this conundrum. Have Apple released a product which is not compatible with third party devices?

Cheers,

Dan

Ok, no problem.

Give me a list of your entire network (all the devices on it).

And I will try and explain it further...

You don't have to have DHCP on the Router, but then you have to 'manually assign' settings to evry device on the network...

...so if you had this on your network.

Hi Again Ric,

Thanks for the reply. I now have all the information you suggested. The missing link was the ISP DNS server IP addresses. While it easy to manually setup the Airport and my Mac I cannot work out how to enter these addressed into my D-Link modem. It uses a user name and password to connect to my ISP. There is no screen for inputting manual DNS server addresses. Any Ideas?

Thanks,

Dan
