USB 8GB Memory stick won't show up in MAC OS X 10.6.8 desktop

Hey there... I'm new to this but would really love some help!

I'm using a family members Mac desktop and I have an 8 GB memory stick with photos that I need to use on their photoshop. Problem is that when I put the memory stick in the usb port it doesnt show up on the desktop or in disk utility... I thought something was up with my memory stick but luckily I have my Macbook with me so tried it in there and it comes up as soon as I put it in.

Any help would be great!
