Two volumes on my external HD

I have two volumes on my external HD , and so TM makes double backups
Is it possible to turn off one volume? I think two volume just takes up spac

Depends. How important or valuable are the contents of one or the other? Are the two volumes in separate partitions?

If you make changes to items in one, does the identical item on the second automatically update? If so, it looks like it’s a mirror image. You could use Disk Utility to inspect the structure.
