Hi folks,

I have a Mac Mini Server that I have been using as a PC (my previous Mac died suddenly and I bought the Server version of the Mini because of the superior hardware). I've been running into more and more software compatibility issues lately, especially with music software, so I'm trying to install regular Snow Leopard on the second hard drive.

I've done the research on this and done all the tricks people suggest, like creating a bootable USB drive rather than using the disk directly, and repartitioning the target drive to make sure it's GUID and has a little bit of unpartitioned space left. However, regardless of whether I use my USB bootable or the disk, it always results in a kernel panic during bootup, followed by the "You need to restart your Mac" message.

Any help with getting this done would be greatly appreciated, or if there's anything I can do to improve Snow Leopard Server's compatibility with apps like Cubase and the Pocket Pod software, that would be great as well!

Here's the error report log:

Chorkie,

This may help?
I bought the new Lion Server and the new 10.7 USB flash drive with the intention of wiping both drives, Option Boot to the USB stick, then install the basic 10.7 Software thus getting rid of all the Server software.

I was assured by Apples Server support team this would work.

Problems, the Option Boot shows the USB stick but when selected the screen shows a grey circle with a diagonal line through it and a little later the system powers off.

After a second call to the Server support time they tell me this will NOT work because the Mini Mac Server has built in Server hardware that prevents any software other than Server software from being installed.

This may be why you cannot install Snow Leopard?

Regards
Michael

miguels, thank you tremendously, especially for relaying what the server tech support folks told you - I figured it had to be something like that, because no rational explanation seemed to apply. And I was just about to try buying the Lion stick, too - glad I know that that won't work, either...

The thing is, the Mac Mini Server is a perfectly good, fairly powerful computer and is just fine for 99% of what I wind up doing on it, it just seems to behave oddly or choke entirely on certain things related to audio interfaces, especially MIDI - which sucks because I chose the Mini specifically in the hope that it would be better for music stuff. Instead, I've had to give up the music for now (until I can get another computer) and focus on things I CAN do with the equipment at my disposal. Ah well, lesson learned - servers are servers and that's all they're good for. :-/

Hi Chorkie,

It was a long time since you posted your proble, sorry I have just seen it recently.

I bought the Server Mini because it gives me a similar power spec to the I7 Imac at half the price. As a photographer I have a nice calibrated monitor so it works just fine, thats when I get it set up eventually.

One other tip which has been driving me mad for days, when the Ipad makes a backup it puts it into users/yourname/library/application support/mobilesync/backup
however, Apple in their wisdom have decided that with Lion they will make the library folder, a hidden item.

Here's a link to explain how to unhide the library folder

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90947.html

Worth keeping even if you dont have an Ipad.
