How can I prevent trash from immediately deleting a file?

Which version of MacOS are you using? By "immediately", do you mean that you send it to the Trash and it disappears straight away?

Yes, it disappears immediately.

I've never had this issue (I also use OS 10.13.4 on both of my Macs), but in doing some searching, it is possible there is an issue with Permissions on the Trash "application". This link has a fix for it:

Note, though, that it was written 2 years ago. But permissions can still get out of whack, for various reasons. Make sure you have a recent backup first before you try it.
