tool to use to scan for malware

I recently had my iMac checked out at a apple store genius bar. They found one, not significant adware that they uninstalled.
He typed in a safe site malware detector of some type that began with M & I didn't think to ask if that is something I could use at home to check for & uninstall if found.

would you know what that might be?

just for future reference. computer seems to be working fine. they uninstalled avast that a non apple computer place installed telling me I needed it for anti virus protection. told by apple not only did I not need it but it in fact could cause my computer to not run as well or even freeze up which it was doing. my best protection I was told was to always install any apple updates promptly. thank you
