To sleep and dream

I have an iMac 10.4.11
A couple of weeks ago I noticed that when it automatically goes to sleep it sometimes doesn't wake up when I hit the space bar or any key.
I then must force shut down and reboot and reopen any windows I was working.
Is there any fix?
