Time Machine Files Missing

Ok folks, I need help. My machine has been getting increasingly glitchy over the last month. I did a full re-install a year ago and it solved the problem. This time I tried a restore and found it it did nothing. I decided that I should just do the full install again. I also noticed that it said that Time Machine was unable to complete the backup. Fine by me because I was about to wipe it. I only wanted the older version. So I do my full install, and when it comes to the part where it asks to pick the restore file, there is only the one from that day. It doesn't even have most of my files.

Is there a way to recover the older files that SHOULD be on there?
