Thumb drive recovery

Hello, this is my first post and need a little help. I have a thumb drive that says there is approximately 1.5 gb left on a 5gb drive. When i open it there is nothing there now it has or had old emails photos and other important data on it. Was wondering if there is anyway to retrieve the missing info. Thanks

-Which model Mac?
-Which version of OS X/macOS?
-Which brand/model is the USB drive?
-How is it formatted?

It may have become corrupted. Depending on the info above, some third-party data recovery applications may be able to retrieve the data. However, they don't always work, and tend to just give you a set of folders by file type with the recovered files, which also tend to lose their file names.
