Text in comment balloons in word was changed to asterisks

Hello,
I'm madly trying to finish my master's thesis and I discovered that the text in the track changes comment balloons was changed to asterisks in the most recent doc that my advisor sent me. Does anyone have a clue as to what this is about and how to fix it? The deadline to turn this in is in two days…...HELP!
