Sudden Trackpad Malfunctions

I'm working on a 2009-built MacBook Pro, and quite abruptly my trackpad is going COOCOO. Luckily I've got a mouse to plug in, but the cursor is kind of doing its own thing & give me a loss of control. I don't even recall spilling anything on it recently. This just happened within an hour ago. Any advice on how to make this LESS BAD until I likely just replace the laptop?

Thank you.

Hello,

Sometimes, a bulging battery can cause issues with the Trackpad. Also, have you tried SMC and NVRAM resets?

Thank you.

I don't even know what those are, ha--so no.The battery is quite old & should probably be replaced. You think that would be the solution to everything?

I'm guessing this is probably what I'd need to buy for the 2009 MacBook Pro 13.3" laptop I use. Is it easy to replace from home or is it best left to a professional?

Sorry for being such an amateur compared to others on here.
