Startup disk and disk repair

I am new to Mac, and on top of it I lost my startup disk. Suddenly my Internet connection stopped working. I run a disk utility and get a message: the underlying task reported failure on exit. 1 HFS volume needs repair. I can not fix the problem within my computer. It seems it needs the external CD. Is it possible to get a new starup disk on line? Is it possible to repair the disk in any other way?
Thank you for any tips.

Hi there and welcome,

you will need the OS install CD or DVD to fix it. This is the easiest way.

Have you not got one ?

You could try booting into Single User Mode and running FSCK.

Give that a go first. Let us know how you get on.
