Spinning colored ball

What do I do when a spinning colored ball appears on my screen, making it impossible to continue work or save existing text?

I would suggest hitting the "Save" button periodically as you work but to answer your question, press Opt  Esc to force quit the app.

I would suggest you would save your work every 5-10 mins or wait for the Spinning yellow ball..
Most people reffer to it as 'The Spining Ball of Death' or 'The spinning BeachBall of Doom'
