so slow please help me

my mac is so slow. its incredible how slow it is, it frustrates me to no end. when we bought it, it was very fast and it amazed me at how fast it was. now it is two or three years later and it is so slow. so slow. i don't know what happened. i look at free pornography online, which i imagine gets alot of cookies in the system, and i download music online, which i understand is also not healthy for the computer.

now, i know absolutely nothing about macs. if i had a pc, i would have some idea of how to delete cookies and free some space, but i am lost. can someone please give me a step by step description of how i can clean out my mac and hopefully make it run smoother? i would much appreciate that, thank you.

Whilst you are waiting for more competent and experienced users to help you, you can look at and delete the cookies by doing the following, assuming you are using Safari. Choose Safari then Preferences then Security the click on Show cookies. Not sure if this will speed you up much. You could also empty your cache: Safari the Empty Cache - again not sure you'll see mega increase in speed.

You probably need to empty all your cache files. To do that you would need some software like Cocktail or MacPilot. You can find either of these on google. MacPilot is the best I have found. You also need to empty or delete all the log files that have been mounting up over the years. Also under utilities in your Apps folder run repair Permissions which will help your apps to respond quicker.
