2017 3ghz quad-core intel core i5
Graphics - Radeon pro 555 2 gb
Memory - 64 gb 3200 mhz ddr4
2TB ssd
MacOS - Ventura 13.7.3

It’s my wife’s iMac, we bought it new, in 2018, it’s always been slower than my iMac which is a 2014 with half the amount of ram and storage.

She uses mail, photoshop and safari.

It’s so slow on boot up, then trying to open any programs is just painful.

At this spec, should we be suffering, running the OS?

What can I try?

Hi there and welcome to the forum.

Are you sure that you have a 2TB SSD in the 2017 iMac? Or are you using an external SSD?

What this sounds like to me is that you have a rotational drive in the iMac, and this is the cause of your slowdown.

Yes! About a year ago I was sick of the complaints, so I took it to our local computer shop (that deals with macs) and had the ssd fitted. Thinking it would solve all the problems.
It was quicker with it, but my wife is still complaining. I mean, I get it, I tried turning it on just to get the spec for this post… and I was so angry with it 🤣

One thing that I have done for people that have a 2017 iMac is to get an external Sandisk Pro-G40 external SSD and plug it into the thunderbolt port on the iMac. This will give you speeds equivalent to the FLASH storage that Apple used in the iMacs (over 2000Mb/sec)

You may want to test the SSD speeds that you are getting now. You can use a utility like AJA System Test Lite (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/aja-system-test-lite/id1092006274?mt=12)
