slow mini mac

I had a 2009 iMac running Snow Leopard and the hard drive finally died. Everything was backed up to an external drive and I bought a mac mini that came pre-installed with OS X 10.8.5. This new computer is noticeably slower. Not painfully slow, but when I log in, it takes about 4-5 seconds before my desktop populates, same as for opening new programs with 12 seconds before iPhoto populates. Any advice on how to speed this baby up?
