slow max os x software

We have only had this mac os x 10.6.4 for 3 months. 2 days ago I downloaded 1200+ photos from a camera memory stick. The system started slowing up..... so I deleted all the pics in the trash and emptied the trash. However things/internet etc are still very very slow. What to do?
