Please I am 73 & not a 'tech' - I am now on my lovely 2rd mac which I have had for only 3 weeks but it is on el captain which my last one was one which had the 'football' so i ditched - I am now so going hither & hither about installalling sierra which basically should have been installed when I purchased it it was just that apple held it back to put the prices up - so from a person who had the reviews who say yes go ahead what do the 'geeks' who know think about it should we stay with el captain or go with sierra - to me it sounds good but having spent many thousands over the past few years on these laptops which I mist say I & my husband love a lot & are now are our live & have saved them & us a lot of money - so we go sierra or not?

First of all, what exact Mac model do you have?

Secondly, are you making backups to an external device? That is critical. And (hopefully) if you are, what software are you using?

Third, have you ever performed any disk cleanup/maintenance/repairs? Even with a "basically" brand new machine (sounds like that is what you have), such tasks are important.

Finally, and this is also critical, are you using any third party applications? If you are, and you want to upgrade to Sierra (now up to version 10.12.2), you need to determine which ones need to be updated. This site will help you with that:

http://roaringapps.com/apps

The best way to use it is to 1) click on Options, 2) "remove/de-select" El Capitan, Yosemite, and Mountain Lion, 3) "remove/de-select" iOS10 and iOS9, and 4) "remove/de-select" Windows 10 and Windows 8.1. You'll just be left with Sierra, and you can then search any app you want for compatibility

Additionally, I recently "upgraded" both of my Macs from El Capitan, OS 10.11.6, to Sierra, OS 10.12.1 about 2 weeks ago (and yesterday upgraded to OS 10.12.2), and all went well. I am not seeing any thing that is "startling" about the new OS, but then I do not put my Macs through much "heavy" use.

(By the way, I am 72 (soon to be 73), but fortunately I was able to obtain knowledge about Apple machines over the years).
