Self-modifying Safari

Using Mavericks - and Safari 9.0.1 - I have been frustrated by the sudden disappearance of the URL line showing what web address I am seeing, and into which URLs are pasted to go to a site. At the same time the BACK and FORWARD arrows have disappeared. This has made Safari virtually unusable - I have downloaded Chrome in order to post this report. Nothing in Prefs makes a difference, and I have pressed every button in sight, but no joy. These things usually turn out to be simple - but not this time.

I have Safari 9.0.1 (not my primary browser) with OS 10.11.1, and everything is fine for me. This think, though, should help you:
