any current window I open on my mac is about 2/3 size. If I make it full screen by pressing the green button the yellow button disappears and I must press the green again to make it small then press the yellow.

Hello and welcome.

Try clicking and holding at the very edge of the side, bottom, or lower right corner of the window and drag it to resize.
