Menu to file or clipboard First, click the appropriate menu to invoke it, then (as above), hit spacebar after invoking Command-Control-Shift-4 or Command-Shift-4 then click the menu.

I am unaware of a way to change the default to jpg as you want...

...if you double click your pdf file, it should open in "Preview" pull down File, Export... from the program menu, select jpg, and Bob's your uncle!

there are free/commercial utilites that will do what you want, such as Snapz ProX, which is very good.

There is also the Grab utility that is part of OS X, but the default format for Grab, is a tiff file.

this should help you out. you can change the screen grab file format to any Quicktime compatible one with a simple command in the Terminal. it will even save it as a Photoshop .psd if you want! this works fine for me in 10.4 and i believe i used it in 10.3 as well:

just type any one of the following lines in the Terminal and hit enter, pick the one for the file format you wish to use

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type pdf
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type png
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type tif
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type psd

you'll probably have to log out and back in again to see the change. hope that helps!

Go

I use the Capture widget. Of course this is for 10.4 or later as it is a Dashboard widget.

Nice interface, easy to change settings, rock-solid, and free.
