Scratch Discs are full

MacBook running Mac OS X 10.6.7
When trying to import photos to edit in Photoshop, it will import some then I get the following message.
'Scratch discs are full'
1. How do I navigate to find their location are more importantly how can I empty them ?
I'm new at this, hence what is probably a simple to answer question. Any help greatly appreciated.
