Scanner/printer connection...gggrrr!!

I recently purchased the Epson CX3600 scanner/printer. Problem is the printer is having trouble connecting & there's no sign of my Mac os 9.1 (don't laugh) recognising the scanner. I'm sure it's compatable but i can't figure out the problem...any ideas???
