SATA drive for iMac g5 NTFS

I have a dead drive in my imac g5 and would like to pull an sata drive from a win xp machine to troubleshoot it. After I replace the drive will the snow leopard boot disc be able to reformat to HFS+? Im worried that the boot disc may not see the HFS+ drive.

Does anybody have any experience with this?

When you boot off the installer DVD there is an option under the menu to go to Disk Utility and you can format form there.
