I must have accidentally hit a keystroke and screwed up the link from the rows of icons at the bottom of the screen. When I hit the safari icon I get an error message. Can someone help me resolve this problem?

Open your Application folder and drag the Safari icon from there straight down onto your Dock ... does that help you?

It doesn't seem to help. I drag the icon down to the dock but when I click on the icon it doesn't go to the start page it goes to Charter.com (my cable provider) and says something about an error has occurred please check the address.

I'm confused.

The row of icons at the bottom of your screen is called the Dock ... is your problem the Dock (software)?

when I click on the icon it doesn't go to the start page it goes to Charter.com

Or an internet issue as the above quote suggest?

Can you surf the net at all?

I can surf the net without a problem. The problem must be with the link between the icon and and the site associated with the icon. When I hit on the postage stamp icon I am linked to the mail site. When I hit on the musical note I am directed to iTunes. But when I hit on the safari icon I am not linked to the safari site. I assume that I must've accidentally changed the link between the safari icon and the safari website. But I can't figure out how to correct the problem.

Try this, launch safari and surf to whichever site you wish to have as your home page. Next launch Safari Preferences, (under Safari in the menubar) and in the General Tab look under the Homepage section where there is a button "Set To Current Page", click that button, quit then relaunch Safari to see if that's what you were after.

Great! Thanks for posting back, you never know when someone else might come here with the same question :)

For what it's worth, the icons in your Dock are just shortcuts or alias' to whichever app they represent. If you drag an icon from the Dock and it goes up in a virtual puff of smoke, the original app hasn't gone anywhere, just the shortcut .... you can also Ctrl-click an icon in the Dock and select "Keep in Dock" if its icon disappears from the Dock after you quit the app ... :)
