Router & IP Address ?

Hello,

Hope that this is the correct/best Forum for this.
Would be most appreciative for any help.

I have a software sw radio package that apparently
uses an IP address.

No problem, but it seems my Router generates a new one each time the pc is turned on and off.
Also, apparently, at random.

I use Comcast

line comes into house, and:

goes to the Comcast Modem
The modem feeds a Cisco Routerr LinkSys EA3500

I know absolutely nothing about Routers, and am terrified, literally,
about messing things up that I finally have working.

But-

Is there, as has been suggested, a simple and foolproof way of forcing the
Router to issue the exact same IP address always ?

Any implications, gotchas, etc. ?

Much thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob,

If your router is reassigning a different address each time that you restart then your DHCP Lease time is set too short. Most routers wont assign a new address unless a device is turned off for at least 3 to 30 days. I always set mine to 30 days.

There are several ways to solve this, The easiest is to set a DHCP Reservation for your PC, but you should also check your lease time and up it.

You should be able to do this easily as long as you know the admin password for your router.
