Retrieving Iphone Message Attachments on Mac through usb cable

Im trying to organize photos and do some clean up. I have over 1000 attachments on my Messages app on my iPhone. I have it connected to my MacBook Air through usb cable. Is there anyway to download all those attachments without first manually saving all them to the photos app then importing them through the Mac Photos app? Any way to download a file with all Message attachments?

-Which iPhone model?
-Which version of iOS?
-Which model Mac?
-Which version of OS X?

I don't know of any easy way to accomplish this, since Apple protects data on iOS devices. I think you will have to save them to the Photos app on the iPhone, then import the photos to the Mac.
