Removal of .dmg password from keychain?

A password protected 50 GB .dmg now opens without asking for/entering the password.

The access control Key for that dmg is set as "confirm before allowing access" and "ask for Keychain Password (both are selected)
BUT it does not ask for the password

If the disk image password is deleted from the Keychain, will it still be accessible - aka then ask for the password to be entered?

-Which version of OS X/macOS?
-Is it possible set to mount automatically in Login Items?
-Have you tried unmounting the DMG, then shutting down/restarting with Reopen windows when logging back in disabled?
-Do you have a backup of the data in the DMG?

C
