Reinstalling OS problems

Hery all!
i recently wiped the hard drive on my 2010 imac, when i went to re install the software from the Recovery mode options it failed after about 10 mins, i've tried 3 times and get the same result. the message says "could not create a preboot volume for APFS install"
i have no idea what to do about this, is it connected to having 2 harddrives do you think, i upgraded staorage about 4 years ago.

-Which exact model iMac?
-Which version of OS X/macOS was on it previously?
-How did you erase the drive - from the Recovery Partition?

It may be best to create a bootable installer if you have access to another Mac:
