Quirky keys

I just upgraded to OS X 10.6.3 Snow Leopard and now whenever i use the space bar the page automatically scrolls to the bottom and i can't finish typing... sometimes the page just disappears and i can't find what i was setting in the first place. I can't find preferences to change this. Also, the volume keys (F7, etc) don't work for volume any more.
Any idea where i can change these preferences back to basics? Thank you!
