Hello and welcome.

The QuarkXPress 5 system requirements are as follows:

Mac OS 8.6 or later
• LaserWriter driver 7.0 or later
• PowerPC-based Mac OS-compatible computer
• CD-ROM drive (or access to a CD-ROM over a network) for installation
• Available RAM for QuarkXPress: 14MB (with virtual memory turned off), 20MB or more recommended for graphics-intensive documents
• Available hard disk space for QuarkXPress installation: 36MB
• Available RAM for QuarkXPress Passport: 16MB (with virtual memory turned off), 22MB or more recommended for graphics-intensive documents
• Available hard disk space for QuarkXPress Passport installation: 53MB

Basically, because it is a native PowerPC app, QuarkXPress5 will not run on an Intel Mac or OS X. It was released in 2002. QuarkXPress 6 (2003) was the first version to officially support OS X. QuarkXPress 7 (2006) was the first Universal binary which officially supported Intel Macs.

QuarkXPress 9 is the most recent version that will open QuarkXPress 5 files. QuarkXPress 10 will only open QuarkXPress 7 or later files.

No worries.

Because software companies tend to change their document properties going forward, it is highly doubtful that QuarkXPress 5 would be able to open QuarkXPress 9 files, especially since it is four versions newer. Not having used QuarkXPress for years, or having access to it currently, I cannot say, but I am 99.9% sure it wouldn't be able to.
