Problems with download options

hi,

i am relatively new to the world of mac, but i'm enjoying it none the less.
but recently i developed a fault and have no idea why it happened or what i did (if anything) to cause it and ultimately what to do to fix it...

i have been watching a tv series online and downloading it to watch again or on my phone etc, but then all of a sudden it wont download the same anymore.

at first it was simple, it's an flv file, whilst it was streaming to my macbook, i simply opened up the activity window and double clicked the file i wanted and up pops a blank window and in my downloads it starts to download and it's then there on my hard drive for later.

but now when i open activity and double click the file i want i get another window but instead of a blank white window i get a grey window with the quicktime logo in the middle and it does nothing...

this is driving me insane!!

does anyone know whats wrong and what i can do to fix it and change it back to how it was...?

Not sure what the file format was initially but flv is not downloaded as playable. There are sites that convert flv streams to downloadable content.

But this is considered piracy by the content providers.
