Hi!

Guys, I need your help. I have experienced some annoying problems after updating to macOS Sonoma 14.7.2 from macOS Ventura. My workflow (in music/video production and documentation etc.) has become slow and therefore causing more stress. I made a list of all the problems as they occurred. What symptoms these could be — some kind of file system error and what else?:

- No project shows up when right-clicking Pages, Logic Pro or Final Cut Pro icon in the dock
- Pages documents (existing and new) take unusually long to open (30-60 seconds)
- Safari opens recently visited website when opening the app even after site history is cleared and Safari is set up to prevent that and instead show Favourites view when opening the app
- Safari freezes temporarily when downloading a file from web
- Safari can’t open downloaded files directly from its download panel
- Logic Pro often freezes when loading project in native mode (non-Rosetta)
- Logic Pro 3rd party plugin windows still open when changing order on channel/track in native mode (non-rosetta), although it’s claimed to be already fixed
- Logic Pro ’File’ -> ’Open Recent’ doesn’t show any project
- Final Cut Pro is frequently performing slow and laggy on many tasks — resizing main window, importing media, even when playing back video with text layer etc.
- Final Cut Pro freezes temporarily but frequently at random moments, e.g. when inserting stock effect, editing text or even when moving the playhead to different position on the timeline
- Final Cut Pro is unable to open a library from finder (error 10822 occurs)
- Final Cut Pro sometimes ’forgets’ text settings in projects and changes have to be made again everytime a library is opened
- Final Cut Pro: Only way to open a recently created library is to open the app and then locate the library manually

That's all I've documented so far.

I have ran Diagnostics and applied First Aid for all internal and external drives. No errors shown.

A number of problems you list seem to be mostly due to spotlight indexing, but not all. But you should probably reindex spotlight first. The best utility I know of for repairing spotlight index is Onyx. It’s free and you can download it from…

Or, if you know your way around Terminal, the code for spotlight reindex is

sudo mdutil -i on /

Enter the command, press return, enter your admin password and press return. After quitting Terminal, check to see if your missing links have been fixed. Good luck.

Thank you for your help! I'll try re-indexing the Spotlight. There's obviously something wrong with my "file system". I can live with those other minor problems if this gets fixed. Hope so!

If you're having problems after updating to macOS Sonoma, try these steps:
  1. Restart your Mac.
  2. Check for any further updates.
  3. Reset PRAM and SMC (System Management Controller).
  4. Look for any incompatible apps and update or remove them.
  5. If problems persist, try reinstalling macOS.
These steps might help fix the issues.

Hi, thank you for these! I have tried to reset PRAM by rebooting, since my Mac is Apple Silicon. I've read M1 Macs don't have separate SMC so it resets by rebooting as well I think. Some people advice to wait over 30 seconds after shutting down and then power up to reset SMC on M1 so I'll give it a try. All apps having problems so far are Apple's own products so I don't believe they could be incompatible. If nothing helps, I will try to reinstall macOS and if these problems still occur, I'll revert back to macOS Ventura from Time Machine backup. Also, I simply can't upgrade to latest macOS because my various 3rd party audio tools are not yet compatible with it.

PRAM reset (command-option-P-R) works on M1 Macs. I do not believe that PRAM gets reset every time you reboot. The main thing to remember every time you reset parameter RAM is that TRIM gets disabled and you have to turn it back on lest your SSDs suffer.

I also noticed your mention of the MBP M1. The earliest M1 MacBook Pro came out in 2020, and can be updated to the latest version of macOS, which is Sequoia. Any reason for staying with macOS Sonoma?

Okay, so Spotlight Indexing didn't work. Next I'll try the PRAM reset the way you explained — thank you for that!

So after performing the PRAM reset, do I enable TRIM by entering "sudo trimforce enable" in Terminal — and that's all?

As mentioned above, I simply can't upgrade to latest macOS because my various 3rd party audio tools are not yet compatible with it.

Ouch! I know the feeling of being held back by older programs that you need to run. It’s the main reason for my having a lot of external SSD storage—I still have older software that need Monterey. Any older than that, adios!

And macOS Sequoia 15.3 RC (24D60) just came out. RC (release candidate) almost always precedes the final wide release of macOS, so you should soon be able to upgrade directly to 15.3 without all the growing pains in 15.0 thru 15.2. Grrrrr!

Yes, that is the code for enabling TRIM. You enter your admin password and press return to run it. And if I recall correctly, you are then prompted to restart. After the restart, go to System Settings, enter “about” in the search field and about will bring you to your main page. On the bottom, click on “System Report…” On the next page, select NVMExpress (under Hardware) and on the main window, if not selected, click on Apple SSD Controller., it will show the status of TRIM Support. It should indicate “Yes.” Leaving TRIM off over time will degrade your SSD. And TRIM is supported for all NVMe SSDs in your system, internal or external.

Yes, that is so annoying! I feel like everything has gotten worse after every system update.. Ventura was quite okay but I still needed to run Logic Pro with Rosetta enabled. And now, with Sonoma, I still have to use Rosetta.

The PRAM reset command (command-option-P-R) seemed to do nothing. I shut my MBP down, waited about 10-15 seconds and after pushing power button, immediately holded the given command until I was at login view. It was like a normal reboot, no indicator of PRAM reset. I checked the system report and TRIM was already enabled. And all of the problems still occur.

This is getting interesting (and proggressively more frustrating..) I think the next step is reinstalling macOS Sonoma and if it still doesn’t fix these problems, I will restore my previous macOS Ventura system from Time Machine.

I have created projects, documents etc. when on Sonoma, so I’m afraid of errors if I open and work them on older macOS Ventura..
