Problems adding an imap-Account on my iMac

I have an iMac (OSX Catalina 10.15.4) and use Apple mail.

I want to add an imap E-mail account but do not see how I can specify that I want an imap, not a pop account. On my iPhone I can choose between imap and pop when adding an e-mail account in mail, but on my iMac I cannot see that choice! Did I miss something?

Thanks for help!

Hello and welcome.

In the more recent versions of macOS, you add accounts in  > System Preferences... > Internet Accounts, not directly in the Mail app.

Who is the email provider?

Hi Cory

Thanks for helping me. My email provider is gmx.ch.

The first problem I have is, that system preferences automatically assigns me a pop account. There is a trick, when I type in a wrong password, in the following window I can specify the account details (but only when I first typed a wrong password):

So I specify all the details like that:

First, it doesn't work: The red message does not dissapear. I click sign in again, without changing anything. Then it works:

I click done. I can see a new account:

But there is also a message popping up on the top right of my screen that tells me:

Mail Password Required
Enter your password for *Username* in Internet Accounts.

I hit continue.

Then in my internet account I type in the password again.

Finally, this message shows up:

And now, I don't know what to do to solve the problem...

OK, thanks for the screenshots.

-Is your account username your full email address or just the part before the @ symbol?
-Did you try entering your username where it says Username: Automatic?
-Does you email provider have webmail access via a browser?

Hey C, I think I have found the problem. I entered my email address where it asks for my username of my email account. That worked! :)

It's strange, because for me a username is not the same as an email address, but maybe apple mail regards the email address associated to an email account as username. Or maybe I chose the my email address as username when I registered at my E-Mail provider...

Who knows...anyway, now it seems to work and to synchronise smoothly.

Thanks for your help! Have a nice weekend!
