Problem upgrading to El Capitan

Hi peeps,

I have an early 2008 imac which I’ve been running lion 10.7.5 on
i tried to download the El Capitan update from the App Store last night and it appeared
in my launchpad ok but when I started the install the progress bar only moves about 5mm
and it does nothing for hours except get hot!

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hello,

-How much free space is available on the drive?
-How did you get the El Capitan installer from the App Store, as it is currently only available in a disk image (DMG) here: How to get old versions of macOS
-Were you having any other issues before attempting the update?

Thanks for your reply!

The drive was empty so loads.

Apologies wasn’t from App Store, that is where I got the download from and think that’s what I got, a DMG. It appeared in my launchpad.

Not running particularly badly other than it was slow.
