Problem opening PDF Files

Please excuse my non techy terminology.

I am having an issue when I download a pdf file. When I open an e-mail attachment or mostly any pdf I can't seem to view the document fully.

What happens is, the file opens fine but when the screen opens the file is covered with a black pane. Its almost as if it is blocked. When I scroll up and down throughout the document and certain parts become visible but I can not view the entire document clearly. This just started happening randomly a few days ago.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

-What version of OS X?
-Do you have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed...if so, what version?
-Are you using webmail via a browser or the Apple Mail app?
