My Epson printer won't scan. Their support tells me that my Mac driver has been impaired by various stuff in the Mac, and for $150 they will fix it. Is this a scam?

Need some more information to help you:

1. What exact Mac model do you have?

2. What exact Mac OS are you using?

3. What is the exact model of your Epson printer?

4. Have you ever done any disk cleanup/maintenance/repairs, from a software perspective? You actually can do a good amount of disk cleanup on your own, and there are some excellent products available (both free and commercial) that can help you with those tasks.

5. This is critical: are you making backups to an external device?

Typically, most printers work "fine" with the Mac OS, as the OS comes with built-in drivers. I myself, though, use a third party program called VueScan that works very, very well with my Cannon Printer/Scanner.

OK, I believe I see the issue. First, here is a link that shows all the printers that are "supported" under High Sierra, with the "included" printer/scanner software:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201465

Note that the Epson XP-840 is not on that list. Can you print documents from that printer?

Secondly, in visiting Epson's site for that particular printer, here is what it says:

https://epson.com/Support/Printers/All-In-Ones/WorkForce-Series/Epson-WorkForce-840/s/SPT_C11CA97201

Interesting that it states initially that the Printer Driver is "available" in High Sierra. But, as you can see, you can download the Scanner Driver and EPSON Scan Utility V3.7.7.1. That has a date of 11/26/13, so hopefully it will work.

If that does not work, then you might have to purchase the scanning software I mentioned, VueScan. I have been using it for quite some time, and it works well. Here is the link for it:

Epson told me to download it from MAC !?

What does that mean??? All you should need to do is click on the link I provided above, and then click on the plus ("+") sign where it says Drivers, and then click on the "spot" where it says "Scanner Driver and Scan Utility V3.7.7.1". Finally, click on download. I just did it, and a file entitled "e[son15963.dmg" would up in my Downloads folder. For you, when that happens, just double click on that file, and follow the instructions for the installation. (I suspect you have instructions about using the scanner features of your printer (and maybe that downloaded scanner driver file has instructions also).
