Previous major Mac OS upgrades have clobbered by PostgreSQL databases and I was never able to fully recover them. Has anyone else had this problem or know of any way to protect from this happening. I am certainly very cautious because of this. Thank you.

I am not familiar with that particular issue, but from what I have seen both here and on 2 other Mac Discussion sites I visit, Big Sur is not that stable. As it is, within a week after the initial version was released (V11.0.1), a beta release came out last week in preparation for the next non-beta release, V11.1. That should be released shortly.

It is common knowledge that the first few versions of a new Mac OS contain bugs/issues. Then of course there is the issue of third party software compatibility. That hits home with me, as there are still 5 critical programs I use that are not yet compatible. The most obvious one is SuperDuper!, which I absolutely depend upon for my backups.

My advice would be to wait until a couple of more releases of Big Sur arrive. Catalina is real stable, rock solid, and performs well. Besides, I see nothing earth shattering in Big Sur that I must have.

Another question: when you have upgraded to a newer version of the Mac OS, did you do a clean, fresh installation of the new OS, or just upgraded "in place"? And how have you been doing all such upgrades?
