Please Help!! Iphone Contacts sync to MacBook won't work

I try to sync my contacts on my iphone 4 or 4s and when I connect the iphone to my MacBook OSX (version 10.6.8), the iphone device only opens up in iphoto not itunes. It's not showing up in itunes. thus, I cannot sync all my contacts to my address book on MacBook. I'm older than most of you reading this post, so please help with any advice. Thanks so much!!

Try this open iTunes then minimise do not close, now plug iPhone and when iPhoto opens close it. Now un minimise iTunes does it show next to your library or iTunes Store box?
